Snake in the park (Written 15 Nov 2015)

Most afternoons, my husband and I used to take our dogs for a walk in a park near where we stayed.  One afternoon, while walking the dogs, Calvin and I were deep in discussion. How I saw it, while being so concentrated on our conversation, I don’t know. I froze in my tracks, plucked at Calvin’s sleeve, and pointed at the Rinkhals. It was reared up and ready to strike, and I had almost stepped on it!
“Follow me,” Calvin grabbed my hand and yanked me after him as he jumped away from the snake.  Sheila, our Chihuahua, was chasing birds some distance away and was safe. But our other dog, our dachshund, *Flooitjie, was sniffing the ground so very close to the snake.
Both Calvin and I called her. “Flooi! Flooi!”  All my muscles were taught. What if she gets a fright and runs in the wrong direction, towards the snake? But she came to us, and I sighed with relief.
I knew it was God who had opened my eyes to see the snake in time, and allowed us to get away from it, unharmed.
Thank you, Lord!

*My dachshund’s name is an Afrikaans name, Vlooi. I have spelled it as Flooi, to make reading of her name easier.

Reflection:

Through this terror experience, God assured me that He will warn me of impending danger, and so rescue me from it.  And God is faithful. From that day, on-wards, God did warn me when danger was near. Although He sometimes warned me of physical danger, He more frequently warned me of dangerous spiritual situations - situations that may cause me to lose faith, to fall away, or to be deceived. While warning me of those situations, He also supplied me with ample ammunition to escape the danger through his written Word, and through revelation in dreams and visions. I am so grateful for God’s warning, preparation, and equipping. Praise be to God!

Scripture:
The Sovereign LORD never does anything without revealing his plan to his servants, the prophets. (Amo 3:7  )

But no weapon will be able to hurt you; you will have an answer for all who accuse you. I will defend my servants and give them victory." The LORD has spoken.
(Isa 54:17)

Prayer:

Father God, thank you that we can call you our Father. Lord, please will you open the senses of our spirits, so that we can connect on a deeper, more intimate level with You. Father, speak to us and let us hear and understand You. Above that, Father, I pray that you will give us new hearts of flesh and make us willing to obey You. Keep us safe from the enemy, oh God, by giving us sharp discernment, and a daily growing Sword. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
